Understanding SEO – Getting a Right Start

photoWeb Technology for Doing Business on the Internet

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was originally defined as the activity of optimizing web pages or whole sites in order to make them more search engine-friendly, thus getting higher positions in search results. At the core it was directed to the “natural” or unpaid search results. This is often referred to as “Organic SEO” The term has been very loosely abused to mean Internet marketing in general and often includes “paid” services to search engines for higher rankings.

Today, this is just the beginning.  SEO has come to mean a larger and more complex list of activities and tasks that reflect the expanding algorithms used by Google and other search engines. Optimization can now mean a number of things but it originally referred to the “things you do to your web pages that help the search engine index your web page”. The  “things you do”  has now expanded to time consuming processes that many website owners nolonger have the time to do and run their businesses.  This “to do” list includes:

  • Website construction and Web Standards
  • Social Media Marketing through services like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Video production and sites like YouTube and Vimeo to name of few of the dozens available.
  • Articles and Content development
  • BackLinking

Much of this list can be automated and is frequently automated to the extreme.  This undermines the original concept of “natural” and “robots” now fight for page rank and search engines link Google keep changing the rules to neutalize this automated arms race.

All of this leaves the website owner in a world of confusion and needing help to make sense of the  “Alice and Wonderland” world. This MeetUp will  help you get started on developing reasonable and rational strategies and if you need to hire assistance you will have the metrics for avoiding the Black hat or “Snake Oil” backside of SEO.
